The Incomprehensible Love Of God

I had a hard time trying to find a word that would describe my inability to understand the love of God.  Siri gave me the word, incomprehensible, which means in this case, our inability to comprehend the depth, the immensity, the infinite and all powerful love of God.

Romans 5: 6 – 8 (KJV) “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.  But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

What an incredible word!  The Word of God is saying that most men would not even dare to die for a righteous person, and even for a good person most would not choose to die.

Yet God in His mercy and grace sends His Son, who willing, died for all sinners.  Romans 3: 10 tells us that there are none righteous, no not one.  Verse 23 says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

Wow!  There is no person, no matter how good we think they have been all their life, that is without sin and capable of earning their own eternal salvation

The Bible also says that Jesus died for the ungodly. That includes every human being ever born or will ever be born.

Jesus died for the ungodly.  We can think of some very ungodly people who have been born on this earth:  Adolf Hitler, rapists, murders, child molesters, whoever we know that we would consider very bad sinners.

However sin is sin.  I am not sure there are degrees of sin, but sin is sin and all men are sinners.  Yet Jesus died for us all.

That to me describes the incomprehensible love of God.  No person, not matter how good and kind we think they are or were, is capable of loving like that.  But that is the love of God.

We are commanded in the Word of God, in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, to love that way.  Love your enemies; bless them that curse you; do good to them that hate you; and pray for those who despitefully use you and persecute you.

There is no human being capable of doing that without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  You can try but it is against basic human nature to love like that, but we are commanded to love that way.

The only way to obey this command of God is to submit to the Lordship and saving of us by Jesus Christ who died for the us, the ungodly.  Then we become the righteous of God in Christ Jesus.

We can then ask for the infilling of the Holy Spirit, referred to as the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  And only by Him and through Him can we love our enemies, blessing those who curse us, doing good to those who hate us and praying for those who despitefully use us and persecute us.

Then we are the true witnesses of the character and nature of our God who commended His love to us while WE were yet sinners.

Praise God for His love, His mercy and His grace.
