Spare Your Words
Back in the early days of rock and roll, a song came out in 1960 called “You Talk Too Much.”
If I remember the words correctly it said, “You talk too much, you weary me to death. You talk too much you even weary my pet…”
Proverbs 17: 27 stresses the fact that sometimes we just talk too much, not understanding that our words are very important.
The Message Bible says it this way in Prov. 17: 27 – 28 “The one who knows much says little; an understanding person remains calm. Even dunces who keep quiet are thought to be wise as long as they keep their mouths shut, they are smart.”
The King James Version says “He that hath knowledge spareth his words.”
We are created in the image and likeness of God. Our God creates with words. What He says will be. (Isaiah 55: 11).
All throughout the New Testament, Jesus tells us about the power of our words, whether they are good words or bad words. We create with our words. We destroy with our words.
Proverbs 18: 21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue”
I have found by experience that people who do not really know the Word of God or know very little about the word say some pretty stupid things. It is better not to speak then to rattle off something you think is in the Bible.
Jesus tells us in Matt. 12: 35 – 36 (Message Bible) “Every one of these careless words is going to come back to haunt you. There will be a time of reckoning. Words are powerful, take them seriously. Words can be your salvation. Words can be your damnation.”
We also have read that without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith speaks. What are you speaking? What words are coming out of your mouth.
I often here Christians taking possession of things that belong to the devil, saying things like my diabetes, or my allergies. They are not yours nor Gods. The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. Don’t take ownership of sickness, disease, poverty and anything that will hurt you.
Why would you allow the devil to give you something that will hurt you! You are a prized possession of God. Spare your words. Think twice before you speak. Faith speaks from the heart. Get the Word of God into your heart and you won’t say things that destroy you.
James 3: 2 “…If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect (mature) man and able to bridle the whole body.”
James tells us that it is impossible to tame the tongue. That may be true for the natural man but with the Holy Spirit we can control the words we speak if we submit our tongues to Him
I have heard people who regretted what they said after blurting it out, “I spoke before I thought.” That is not true. What happened was what you said bypassed you mind and came right from your heart. That is why it is important to hide the word of God in your heart by repeatedly saying it until you really believe it.
Let’s learn to spare our words. The Biblical definition of the word spare means to restrain. If you can control your words, you will control your life.
