Triggers

The dictionary defines the word, trigger, as a lever to release a catch; something pressed to activate a firing mechanism; to activate an action.
Today we will be referring to that final definition: to active an action.
As humans, our mind is an incredible organism.  Our mind or brain has the ability to store an enormous amount of information.  Unfortunately, some of that information, what we call memories, are things we would like to forget.
Times of loss, betrayals, sickness, embarrassment, so many times of sorrow and pain that we would like to forget.  Thank God, over time, many of those memories begin to fade.  They no longer seem to haunt us every day like they used to.
Then, bam, an encounter with someone, a song, a smell, a new environment brings back a painful memory.
These things are called triggers.  They active an action.  They are like that mechanism that activates that gun to fire.  Only in this case, that encounter with someone, that song, that smell, that thing you see, brings back that painful memory.
Those triggers create thoughts.  Thoughts that were unexpected, set off by a trigger.
Sometimes you cannot help but have to face that memory or thought.  What can I do to stop those thoughts? Many times you cannot control the trigger but thank God we do have some instruction in the Word of God to help us deprive that thought or memory from its power to cause pain, sorrow or suffering.
The answer is found in II Corinth. 10: 4-5 (KJV) “for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, (not of human design), but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds (those things that have a strong hold on you.)
